INTERtidal Solutions

Despite the challenging conditions of the intertidal zone, a diverse array of marine life is supported by these dynamic environments. By collaborating with stakeholders and communities who value these environments, we develop complex, scalable eco-friendly solutions which can be implemented across a range of applications.

The expansion of coastal infrastructure has created a unique opportunity to build nature inclusivity into our communities. Fulfilling this role, we are providing custom designed products for use throughout the intertidal range, combining recycled, low-carbon materials with client led designs.

    Nature Inclusive Coastlines

Coastlines require protection from erosion to prevent flooding and protect communities. Concrete is a common material for coastal protection due to its strength and ability to be cast into complex shapes which can be scaled to suit the specific environment they will be deployed in. The use of concrete also permits nature inclusivity to be incorporated into the design itself, as seen in Greening the Grey.

In this way, innovation allows for nature-inclusivity to be built into coastal protection, which can be retrofitted along our developed coasts and incorporated seamlessly into new construction. Ecologically engineered solutions are at the forefront of our work, with the incorporation of macro features such as pools, overhangs, and crawl spaces able to mimic niche environments and help biodiversity to flourish.

    Thriving Waterfronts

Waterfront areas such as quays, marinas and harbours are significant culturally and commercially. Exo Engineering has developed a range of protective marine structures which integrate complex surface textures and macro features, creating opportunities for pioneer species to colonise these areas. These nature-inclusive designs represent a solution to protecting waterfronts in an environmentally conscious manner, satisfying community requirements, and granting nature the ability to prosper.

Nature inclusivity can be integrated into a variety of applications. Combining eco-friendly structure development with community engagement promotes the development of positive attitudes towards the adoption of nature inclusive designs in waterfront communities.
