Tidal Pools units deployed on the South coast

Problem

Tidal Pools following manufacturing

The continued development of coastal areas has seen many natural coastal features replaced with hard engineering approaches such as sea walls. Typically designed to provide the sole function of coastal protection, much of the natural complexity is lost at the expense of protecting coastal communities.

Solution

To reintroduce natural features such as water retaining features to the coastline of Poole, Exo Engineering teamed up with Knightsbrown Construction to design large Tidal Pool units which retain up to 150 litres of water.

This is crucial for many coastal organisms, who rely on shade and pool habitats for protection from the sun and from drying out.

Coupled with our signature swirling textures, we can enhance surface textures to increase complexity and provide a wide range of ledges and overhands for coastal species to use as habitat.

Results

The result is an aesthetic coastal defence unit which benefits coastal biodiversity whilst protecting our coastlines from erosion. 5 of these tidal pool units are due to be installed at Pool Harbour in the coming months, and we look forward to sharing more images of them once they are in place.
